Like Modern Warfare’s Spec Ops, but with an episodic storyline spanning months of DLC.

Halo 4’s new Spartan Ops multiplayer mode, which replaces Firefight, has been detailed by GameInformer (via NeoGAF).

Described as working similarly to Modern Warfare’s Spec Ops mode, Spartan Ops will boast an episodic campaign delivered via DLC over a period of several months. This is said to compare in size to Halo 4’s campaign, itself playable cooperatively by up to four players.

In Spartan Ops, Spartan Points are redeemed to buy armour, armour abilities and new missions. Returning armour abilities include hologram, jetpack and active camo, whilst sprint is the default ability for all players. A newcomer is Forerunner Vision, which discourages camping by making it possible to see through walls.

Halo 4’s regular multiplayer modes have also been fleshed out with some new info. Weapon drops appear in pods at random locations around maps, removing the ability to weapon camp. Respawn delay has also been removed, with a press of the X button sending downed players immediately back into the action.

And 343 Industries has also conjured up a backstory explaining why Reds fight Blues, though it sounds a little flimsy: it’s for training purposes, taking place inside a virtual reality simulator housed in a huge space ship called the UNSC Infinity. Elites aren’t playable.

The magazine also reveals a few snippets of campaign info, notably that AI companion Cortana is coming to the end of her life.

Halo 4 will be released this side of Christmas, with E3 in June the likely venue for an official release date announcement.
