You’re kidding me – – right?

Teen legally known only as ‘Girl’ battles to use her own name

A 15-year-old is suing the Icelandic state for the right to legally use the name given to her by her mother. The problem? Blaer, which means “light breeze” in Icelandic, is not on a list approved by the government.

Like a handful of other countries, including Germany and Denmark, Iceland has official rules about what a baby can be named. In a country comfortable with a firm state role, most people don’t question the Personal Names Register, a list of 1,712 male names and 1,853 female names that fit Icelandic grammar and pronunciation rules and that officials maintain will protect children from embarrassment. Parents can take from the list or apply to a special committee that has the power to say yea or nay.

In Blaer’s case, her mother said she learned the name wasn’t on the register only after the priest who baptized the child later informed her he had mistakenly allowed it.

Microsoft ‘to replace Xbox Live voice chat with Skype

Microsoft will place Skype at the centre of a whole suite of online-capable communication devices, CVG has learned.

Xbox Live Screenshot

A person familiar with the matter said Microsoft will be “consolidating all their communications technology” around the Skype platform. This means that Skype will become the default chat service on the next generation Xbox console as well as on PC and tablets, the person said.

He added: “You might jump to the conclusion that we’ll see asynchronous voice and video messages in next-gen Xbox Live”.

Microsoft’s $8.5 billion acquisition of Skype in 2011 was marked as the software giant’s largest ever acquisition in its forty year history. The corporation has since opened its own Skype division within Microsoft, headed up by Skype’s former Chief executive Tony Bates.

In November, Microsoft announced it was preparing to close its instant message chat service MSN and replace it with Skype’s messaging tool.

A recent job advertisement revealed Microsoft was seeking a user interface designer for the “next gen Xbox”. The job location was said to be at Microsoft’s UK-based Skype offices.

“The team you’ll join is responsible for Skype in the living room (broadly the home), across various devices but with a focus on the large screen and the next generation of Xbox,” the job ad reads.

Utah Doctors Declare Health Emergency over Salt Lake City Smog

A group of Utah doctors is declaring a health emergency over the Salt Lake City area’s lingering air pollution problem.

Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment planned to deliver a petition Wednesday demanding immediate action by elected officials.

The group wants Gov. Gary Herbert and mayors of northern Utah cities to cut the pollution.

The doctors suggest lowering highway speed limits, making mass transit free for the winter and curbing industrial activities. They want a permanent ban on wood-burning. And they want large employees to let people work from home.

The doctors are advising people to avoid the outdoors. They say people can help their bodies fight toxic exposure by introducing anti-oxidants in their diet, like fish oil or chocolate.

I can’t imagine them pulling off all those changes, but the future is definitely now and we are filling up our atmosphere with toxic waste. Ah for the days when our vehicles will be run by fusion drives…

Whoa! Looks like today is a double dipper for this thread:

Defense chief Panetta to clear women for combat roles

By Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube, NBC News

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has decided to clear the way for women to serve in many combat positions in the U.S. armed forces, a senior defense official told NBC News on Wednesday afternoon.

The Pentagon chief will announce on Thursday that he is eliminating the direct ground combat exclusion — the Department of Defense policy that excluded women from assignment to units below the brigade level if the unit would be engaged in direct combat.

This will allow women to be assigned to select positions in ground combat units at the battalion level.

“I support it. It reflects the reality of 21st century military operations,” said Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, in anticipation of the announcement.

“We are moving in the direction of women as infantry soldiers,” one senior defense official said. Panetta’s decision mandates that the studies and reviews on women as infantry soldiers must be completed by October 2015 — women soldiers will not be assigned to infantry any sooner than that, the official explained.

This announcement will open approximately 237,000 individual jobs to women across service branches, including 5,000 positions for female Marines in ground combat elements.

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., called the decision “historic.”

“In fact, it’s important to remember that in recent wars that lacked any true front lines, thousands of women already spent their days in combat situations serving side-by-side with their fellow male servicemembers,” said Murray, who heads the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

In November, a group of women in the military and the non-profit American Civil Liberties Union sued the Pentagon over the policy of excluding women from combat roles. Their complaint argued that they were already serving in combat roles, but not getting recognized for it.

Panetta’s decision will give the military branches until the beginning of 2016 to seek exceptions if they believe any positions must remain closed to females, defense sources told The Associated Press. The move came at the recommendation of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the sources said.

Panetta is expected to leave his position as Defense Secretary in February.

NBC News correspondent Kelly O’Donnell and NBC staff writer Kari Huus and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Ok, this one goes borderline to content I usually avoid, preferring to shy away from causing offense and unnecessary drama, but I gotta say: This is just silly.

Lego accused of racism because of the shape of Jabba the Hutt’s palace

You can call Jabba the Hutt a lot of things (gross, lazy, terrible to sit next to on an airplane), but calling him racist might be a stretch. Austria’s Turkish community wants an apology from Lego, accusing the company of using Istanbul’s famous Hagia Sophia mosque as a model for Jabba’s Palace in one of its Star Wars-themed sets. The Turkish Cultural Community of Austria referred to Jabba himself as a “terrorist” and complained that “the whole scene smacks of racial prejudice and vulgar insinuations against Asians and Orientals as people with … criminal personalities.” A Lego spokesperson politely reminded them that the set was based solely on the “fictional content of the Star Wars saga.”

Source: http://now.msn.com/lego-accused-of-racism-over-jabba-the-hutt-palace

Now, I can see resemblance of two architectural features between the mosque and Jabba’s “Hut” (har har), but saying the one is representing the other is like saying someone copied a song just because it has a couple of the same notes. There are only so many notes!! There are only so many architectural features one can play with when designing fictitional establishments!

Here is the mosque:

On a side note: Did you realize fictitional isn’t “officially” a word? My bet is it’ll make it into the dictionary eventually. Until then, I’ll just act as if ;)

First Stand Alone Star Wars movie to star Yoda

Back when Disney bought LucasFilm last year, the plan was to make a new “Star Wars” trilogy as well as stand-alone movies set within that universe. Now word has come that the first individual “Star Wars” film may star a familiar little green Jedi.

According to a loosely sourced report at Ain’t It Cool News, Yoda will be the main character of a “Star Wars” film that is separate from the already announced new trilogy.

The report at AICN doesn’t offer much more in the way of details, including whether the movie would focus on a younger Yoda, the elderly one from the original films, or the Jedi Master at some other stage of his life.

AICN also mentions in passing the possibility of a movie based around Jabba the Hut, the slug-like crime boss who controlled much of the planet Tatooine in the first six films.

These aren’t the only “Star Wars” spinoffs that have been rumored. Director Joe Johnston (“Captain America”) has indicated his desire to build a movie around the mysterious bounty hunter Boba Fett, while Vulture reported recently that Zack Snyder (“Man of Steel”) was going to direct a “Star Wars” film inspired by “The Seven Samurai” — a report that Snyder’s reps denied.

But with Disney hoping to bring out a new “Star Wars” adventure “every two or three years,” according to CEO Robert Iger, spin-off adventures starring supporting characters would seem to be a natural complement to the main trilogy. The first episode of that is going to be directed by J.J. Abrams and is tentatively due out in 2015.

UPDATE: Disney CEO Robert Iger confirmed to CNBC this afternoon that there will indeed be stand-alone “Star Wars” movies, and that they will be written by Simon Kinberg (“Mr. and Mrs. Smith”) and Lawrence Kasdan (“The Empire Strikes Back”). “Episode VII” director J.J. Abrams is consulting on them. Iger would not reveal which characters the movies would focus on, but did say that they would come out during the same period of time as the main trilogy — a six-year cycle beginning in 2015.

How about it, “Star Wars” fans? Does a movie about Yoda sound like a winner to you? Any other characters you’d like to see get their own starring vehicle?

So anybody who hasn’t heard yet, a meteor or meteor shower is thought to have hit Russia yesterday. Tons of people caught parts of it on their phones and cameras and it’s all over the net, but nailing down specific facts is difficult. Here’s what seems to be fact so far:

* The metor is thought to have been comprised mostly of iron

* at approx 32,000 feet it exploded, the shockwave busting windows and building damage

* energy of the explosion thought to be equivalent to 300 kilotons of TNT

* approx 1,000 people were injured, mostly from shattered glass, but no fatalities have been reported

* it was thought all of it evaporated in the atmosphere but they’ve found a 20ft hole through ice over a lake

* we didn’t see it coming

* largest meteor blast in Russia since 1908

* has nothing to do with the astroid that has already passed Earth at it’s closest and is now moving away (DA14) they were on different trajectories.

Facebook policy, not vanity, forcing 104-year-old to lie about her age

In real life, Marguerite Joseph is 104 years old. But according to her Facebook profile, she’s a relatively sprightly 99. It’s not that the grandmother from Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich., doesn’t want to admit how old she really is, but because a Facebook glitch forces her to lie about her age. Her granddaughter Gail Marlow says that whenever she tries to enter Marguerite’s birth year 1908, the social network automatically resets it to 1928. “I would love to see her real age on Facebook… in April she’s going to be 105. It’s special,” said Marlow, who’s tried contacting Mark Zuckerberg for help, to no avail.

Thought this concept was a fun one, didn’t realize the conflict was there until I started to post it here and read it to the end. I think the conflict is silly and for people who don’t have anything better to do with their lives. Why did he do it? Why, because he loves his daughter and she asked, and he could.

Damsel (not) in distress: Dad hacks Donkey Kong for his daughter

In Mike Mika’s version of “Donkey Kong” it is the damsel Pauline who does the rescuing. Don’t worry Mario (aka Jumpman), she’s on her way to save you from Donkey Kong.

If you’ve ever played the “Donkey Kong” video game then you know how it goes: That big bad ape Donkey Kong kidnaps a helpless lass named Pauline. You, the player, then control daring plumber Mario as he jumps barrels, climbs scaffolding and traverses elevators until he finally triumphs over the great ape and rescues the damsel in distress.

Mike Mika’s 3 1/2 -year-old daughter Ellis loves playing “Donkey Kong.” She’s been playing it with her dad since she was 2 years old. But last week she decided she wanted to play the game a little bit differently. She wanted to play as Pauline … and she wanted Pauline to rescue Mario.

The wee gamer had just played “Super Mario Bros. 2” — a game that allowed her to play as Princess Toadstool. And she really liked playing as a girl character. And so she was bummed when Mika told her that she couldn’t play “Donkey Kong” as Pauline.

Or could she?

“I make games for a living, so I realized I should be able to solve this problem,” Mika told NBC News in a recent interview.

Mika is the chief creative officer at Other Ocean Interactive and has worked on games like “Super Street Fighter” and “Rock Band.” After getting some advice from a friend, he found the tools he needed. And so he hacked the 2010 NES “Donkey Kong” ROM and created “Donkey Kong: Pauline Edition.”

He posted a video of his work to YouTube, which you can check out below. (And if you want to read more about the technical tinkering check out Mika’s guest editorial over at Wired.)

[youtube:34z33dnq][/youtube:34z33dnq]

When Mika showed Ellis what he’d done, “She was very excited. She wanted to play that character pretty bad,” he said. Of course, she had no idea how much love went into the project. “For all she knew I just figured out a way to make the character show up. She didn’t realize I’d spent the time on it.”

But while Mika had expected his daughter would be thrilled with this new “Donkey Kong,” he had not anticipated the reaction he’d get from the rest of the Internet.

“I was expecting that it would be something that other people like me — my nerdy friends who like to hack ROMS or make games or whatever — that they would find interesting,” he said. “I didn’t expect the gender role debate that just exploded with it.”

Video games have a long history of featuring male protagonists rescuing female damsels in distress. Mario, for example, has rescued more than his fair share of luckless ladies. And though this is changing with time, it has been a point of contention for many a woman gamer tired of seeing this trope played out time and time again.

Mika’s changes to “Donkey Kong” have fired up the discussion again. His YouTube video has racked up more than 150,000 views — and some 500-plus comments. It has also inspired a lengthy discussion on Reddit and on numerous gaming sites where the news of his “Donkey Kong” modification has appeared.

Many women (and men) have not only hailed Mika as the “WORLD’S BEST DAD!!!” that he clearly is, but have lauded him for his efforts on behalf of gender equality in gaming.

Others, however, have been less kind about his efforts. Some critics are simply ugly, misogynistic trolls who decry any effort that seems vaguely “feminist,” but others have wondered whether it’s appropriate to change the hard work of other game developers to please the whims of a child.

“Well that ruins the game….not to mention teaches her a bad habit of not appreciating gaming and game design,” writes commenter WarrkaStrauss in a discussion on game site Kotaku. “He can’t rewrite a book to appeal to her or reshoot a movie so why change a game?”

For his part, Mika says he’s found the discussion fascinating (if sometimes disturbing). “For me, being a guy growing up, I’ve never been able to see through the eyes of a girl and I’m seeing it right now and it’s pretty interesting,” he says.

He points out that he didn’t have an agenda when he changed “Donkey Kong” other than, “I just wanted to do whatever it took to keep my daughter playing games with me.”

But in response to those who criticize him for altering someone else’s work, as a game developer himself he points out, “For game makers it’s the ultimate satisfaction when people who enjoy your game try to modify or extend it,” he says, pointing out that highly respected companies like Valve have embraced and encouraged exactly this. “It’s the ultimate praise for a work. And so ‘Donkey Kong,’ in that respect, is long overdue.”

Incredibly tough guy finds knife in back 3 years after stabbing

We joke a lot about our neighbors to the north, but never forget there are Canadians out there who make Chuck Norris look like Richard Simmons. Case in point: Billy McNeely, a man who recently discovered a nearly three-inch knife blade embedded in his back, three years after being stabbed five times in a fight over an arm-wrestling contest. Because this story just had to get more masculine. McNeely then walked around setting off metal detectors for three years before discovering the blade. He says he feels fine now, and of the knife, said, “I’ve got it in my pocket right now.” Because Canadians are hardasses.

Source: MSN Now

I’d say he’s either kinda tubby or he doesn’t move much. I can’t see that amount of metal in a guy’s back and not notice it’s cutting you as you bend and twist. Sure would be nice to know more of the story where he realizes it’s there!

School suspends child for edgy-in-1981 Mohawk haircut

Ethan Clos has been suspended from Ohio’s Reid Elementary for sporting a spiked Mohawk haircut. (In case you live under a hairless rock: The Mohawk is a haircut where the head is shaved and only a strip of hair between the eyebrows remains; it was last considered “edgy” or “dangerous” ca. 1981.) Clos’s mother, Keshia Castle, said Ethan, who is 5 years old, felt “cool” with his new ‘do, saying, “All the little kids were going over and feeling on it and everything.” A football coach from neighboring Shawnee High School was profiled in local papers for sporting a Mohawk to motivate his team in 2011, but school superintendent Gregg Morris said the two situations don’t compare because “classrooms were not disrupted” by the coach’s hair.
