Just a thread to share stuff you see on the internets. Saw an article yesterday talking about how Christian Bale was upset about what happened to the people who were attacked in Aurora at the Batman premier. Apparently, he was moved enough to go visit them in the hospital. Just thought that was kind of a cool thing for him to do.

Christian Bale swoops in to visit Aurora shooting victims

Christian Bale has answered the call. Ever since the horrific shooting at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater last week, pleas have gone out for Batman himself to visit the injured and show them they needn’t fear the caped crusader. Today Bale made good on that and visited victims recovering at the Medical Center of Aurora. Bale’s visit was unassuming — he reportedly entered via an ambulance — and a spokesman for Warner Bros., the studio behind “The Dark Knight Rises,” asserted that the star was visiting on his own and representing himself, not the studio. This is how real superheroes do it.

U.S. soldier to shoot laser pistol in Olympic pentathlon

It’s Friday and we here at Defense Tech have a case of Olympic fever with the Opening Ceremonies scheduled for this evening in London. In the spirit of the games we felt a Olympic themed post was necessary. But whats there to write about in regards to military tech unless you go down the depressing road of the anti-aircraft systems posted around London for security.

Well, we know for sure that Defense Tech readers appreciate guns and can’t read enough about lasers. So, when we heard the pentathlon traded traditional air pistols for laser pistols, it grabbed our attention. When we found out Army Spc. Dennis Bowsher would be competing, we were hooked.

First, the lasers. The modern pentathlon is made up of five events: pistol shooting, fencing, 200 meter freestyle swimming, show jumping, and a 3 kilometer cross-country run. The Union International de Pentathlon Moderne is the association that governs the sport. Its officials made the controversial decision to move to laser pistols in 2011 because it made the sport safer, allowing athletes to compete in more venues, and reducing the environmental footprint by getting rid of the pellets.

Officials with USA Shooting criticized the ruling saying it was turning the sport into an “arcade game.” Plenty of others questioned how big of a footprint a tiny lead pellet could create, but the decision has been made and they are going forward with the lasers.

From a sport standpoint, pentathletes questioned what would happen if the lasers malfunctioned. How could a judge tell if the gun was broken or the pentathlete was just a bad shot?

BAE Systems worked with the United Kingdom pentathlon team to make sure their laser pistols will be accurate for the Olympics. The defense contractor built a mobile laser pistol evaluation device called “ULTeMo.” Pentathletes can test their pistols before a competition to ensure they are accurate.

Michael Clarke Duncun died of a heart attack this morning :( that makes me so sad! At 6’4″ and a hulking body builder, he could have looked mean, but I always saw kindness in those eyes. He was only 54.

RIP, Michael…

Loved him in the Green Mile. He was perfect for the role of John Coffey.

Patent Shows Off Xbox Projection Technology

A recently uncovered Microsoft patent shows off projection technology that displays video on more than just your television.

The patent shows a player with no controller in their hand playing some kind of shooter against miniature antagonists. There is presumably a Kinect and some kind of projection device mounted on top of the television. The projector is displaying everything outside the view of the television onto the walls around the player. It seems like a cool, immersive idea – if your TV is surrounded by blank walls. It will also be impossible to complain about getting fired on from off-screen if this truly is technology we will see in the future.

If this technology works, I could see it being very cool. The projected video would probably do nothing more than fill the stretches of your peripheral vision, but just adding that little bit might make everything seem more real.

Looks like you might need to get rid of your windows also.

That Kinect is huge.

Well even if there are some objects blocking the full view, a lot of it would stilll come through. I mean, it’s just in your peripherals, anyway, so like if something is coming up from a side-view you’d see movement, etc and be able to “look” over there. Probably would be majorly disorienting at first, seeing as you wouldn’t really turn… but yeah, during the day you’d have to have some pretty heavy-duty curtains for it to work.

Still is pretty cool: one step closer to a holo-deck :D (I am NOT a Trekkie-nerd! What are you talking about? )

FYI: For anyone who has tried to post videos and it’s not working, pay attention to the example given when the window pops up. At this time it does not support https, so just take the “s” off and anything past the video ID

Eve’s Rib: Woman Successfully Grows Ear from Arm

It seems like the plots from science fiction are increasingly becoming part of our reality – something that Sherrie Walters knows all too well. Walters’ doctors have been able to grow an ear on her arm and then attach it to the side of her face, giving her a functioning ear again.

In 2008, Sherrie Walters, now 42 years old, discovered that she had rapidly spreading basal cell cancer in her ear. The disease is a type of skin cancer. The doctors pursued an aggressive treatment to combat the destructive disease, removing her ear, part of her skull, and her left ear canal. Though Walters was left without an ear, she was still able to hear with the help of a special hearing aid.

A few months ago, doctors from the renowned Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore decided to try a new procedure on Walters. Using cartilage from her rib, the doctors stitched a new ear to match her right one. Then their creation was implanted under the skin of her forearm, where the ear grew for months.

“We started making jokes just to try to get used to it and I was like, ‘Can you hear me? Can you hear me?'” Derrick Walters, her husband, said.

Doctors attached the ear and blood vessels surgically. Another surgery, conducted this week, gave the ear shape and detail. Dr. Patrick Byrne, a revered plastic and reconstructive surgeon, says that after the swelling goes down and the ear heals, Walters will have an ear that both looks and functions normally. Walters has two more minor surgeries left, but if everything goes well, Walters’ newly constructed ear could last for decades.

And Sherrie Walters considers herself lucky and hopes other people can learn from her experiences. “It’s a cliché,” she said, “but use the sunscreen and if you are not sure about something, get it checked because that’s what I didn’t do.”

What a trip! Yeah, I’ve been seeing a lot of stuff lately about gene therapy, which gives me the creeps but also is logically the next step in human development in ridding ourselves of birth defects and some diseases. Very cool “of the future” trippy stuff!

This one family has been cured of “Bubble Boy” disease, two children in the family. Very cool. And two more teens are facing imminent blindness and deafness and they are using gene therapy to hopefully stop the blindness. Delivered by viruses, which already look like some kind of nanobot machine:

Real image of virus injecting DNA into a cell:

I’m reading a Greg Bear novel and in it he mentions that at that time (in the future) it is believed that bacteria are actually responsible for the creation of viruses. Interesting concept, not sure if it’s based on fact at all. Might have to look into that when I have time.

Whoa. That would only work in an interior room with little to no light coming in from windows and stuff. Sounds like the perfect tech for Johnny living in his mother’s basement. Laugh

Poop-Eating Worms Power the Eco-Toilets of the Future

We’ve got seven billion people on this planet, and a whole lot more coming. While we worry about where all those people are going to live, and what they’re going to eat and drink, it’s not often that we think about where they’re going to poop.

Last year when I spoke to Jack Sim, head of the World Toilet Organization, he explained the two major issues that we’re already facing with sanitation. First is the simple lack of access that billions of people still don’t have. And for those that do, out current sanitation system wastes an enormous amount of water and, as Sim noted, also wastes a huge amount of important nutrients, like phosphorous, that gets washed away with our brown gold.

The poop industry is ripe for disruption, and a French company is offering one solution: Use turd-eating worms to compost waste right at the source.

The company, Ecosphere Technologies, has developed an outhouse that, rather than relying on chemicals like a port-a-john, relies on about a pound of red wiggler worms that are native to Europe. A new installation in Quebec uses imported worms, placed inside of a mixture of dung and straw underneath to toilet, to devour feces delivered to them by a conveyor belt system. (When someone uses the toilet, pee filters through sand to wash away, while a pedal allows the user to transport their poo to the worm space.)

“A worm eats almost its own weight in food each day,” worm farmer Helene Beaumont told the AFP during a demo at a golf course “And the more poop there is to eat, the more they reproduce.”

The whole system uses no water or electricity, and a series of passive vents allegedly keeps the toilet smelling great. The company claims it can be used 10,000 times without servicing, which is far better than what a port-a-potty can boast, although with a current price tag of $40k for the worm system, port-a-potties are still a lot cheaper. While it’s of course rather unrealistic to assume that people are going to be keeping poop worms in their house, for the 40 percent of the human population that doesn’t have consistent access to sanitation, and for the millions of semi-permanent, very stinky portable toilets out there (looking at you Prospect Park), poop composting worms might be the perfect solution to an unpleasant problem.

Good Samaritans lift car to rescue woman, 2 young grandchildren trapped underneath

By Andrew Siff, NBCNewYork.com

About 20 Good Samaritans rushed to rescue a woman and her two toddler grandchildren when they were run over by an elderly driver in a busy section of New York Friday afternoon, authorities and witnesses said.

The 77-year-old driver was backing up on a street in the Bushwick area of Brooklyn when he hit the grandmother, identified as Elizabeth Castillo, and the toddlers, who were in strollers, according to witnesses.

Follow @NBCNewsUS

The driver seemed to panic when he felt the impact and hit the gas pedal, further reversing the car up on the sidewalk and through a chain-link fence.

“You saw the carriages go straight underneath” the car, said witness Kim Miller.

Bystanders quickly rushed to the victims’ aid and gathered around the car that had pinned Castillo and the children, 3-year-old Tyrese and 17-month-old Tashia.

“The babies were under there, so about 20 of us got together, lifted up the car and dragged everybody out,” Edwin Padua said.

“Everybody’s voices came out, ‘Lift the car up!'” said a neighbor who gave his name as McRae. “We started proceeding to lift the car, and we got some of them out.”

Castillo suffered a broken collarbone, and Tashia had a broken arm, according to family. Both children received cuts.

All three are in Bellevue Hospital in stable conditions.

Tashia’s father, who watched video of neighbors on the bustling block rushing to help, told NBC 4 New York that he was touched by their heroism.

“I love them for doing that. I love them for doing that,” he said.
