I guess there’s the issue right there: If I can do many things well, and I’m easily distracted, how do I choose a focus?
What are your interests? Do you want to go beyond halo? I think that you can explore a variety of things so long as it fits under the concept of the website as a whole. A halo site may not do so well at discussing Battlefield. But a gaming website could have separate categories for each game you are interested in. Similarly, a halo site could include graphics/videos/t-shirt designs etc which have some kind of connection to halo. And the occasional peppering of astronomy makes for a good read on a halo site. But if you want to rank for astronomy then a separate site for that would be better. Ultimately, if your goal is to draw traffic, I think that your best bet is to have a separate site for each major interest (one for halo, one for Battlefield, one for Destiny, etc) simply because by putting the name of the game in the website’s name gives you an instant SEO advantage over other sites which do not. However, getting traffic is different than encouraging participation. And multiple sites is more difficult to keep a handle on. I think that for the primary purpose of building participation it may be better to have a gaming site with categories by game. [/quote]
You make some very good points here, Krull, and so focused!
Like I’ve said, one thing I’m sure of is my primary purpose is building participation. However, to build participation you have to draw in traffic.
So:
1. I enjoy interacting with people
2. I enjoy being of service and providing entertainment & I’m willing to do this to draw in traffic to interact with people.
3. I need to decide a focus for the entertainment I provide that will draw in the most traffic so that there is plenty of participation. Because spending hours and hours creating entertainment that is useful to only a handful of people is not worth all the effort I put into it, and does not produce the return I need to fuel me to continue. I need people to be using the entertainment I create, or it needs to be drawing in enough people for me to have that interaction, otherwise it’s not worth the time and energy I put into it.
I definitely don’t have the time to run more than one site, at least not unless or until I get teams helping run sites, which is a natural part of more traffic=more peeps=more of a chance those who are interested in writing articles, running games nights, helping with vids, etc – in short creating entertainment. So as far as SEO goes and having sites that match game titles, I’m just not sure what to do. I think my main focus will continue to be Halo for quite awhile, but it seems to me an fps site would bring in more people.
Here are some changes happening so far (at least as of today, lol):
* Krull is going to help CHa0s write a series of articles on strategy for Halo: The Master Chief Collection.
* Halo Diehards is starting a podcast.
* CHa0s has started streaming and will continue to do so, w/ or w/out her face, lol
* CHa0s will continue working on the SEO of the site, which Krull has guided on immensely
* CHa0s has been re-organizing the site and fixing issues w/ hidden pages, etc
* CHa0s will continue maintainence on the site
* Every Thurs I’m going to try and reTweet and Google+ an old article (#ThrowbackThursday)
* I’ll keep sharing art, people seem to really dig that
* CHa0s will try to put out one video per week (at least)
* CHa0s will try to host customs on Friday nights if Yukon is not available/interested
As you can see, that is a LOT!! And did you notice anything? I didn’t even put writing articles on the list, which includes browsing Twitter and newssites. Also not on that list is maintaining contacts with other communities or working on any art.
All of these things take research, they take self-education, they take time. I don’t have time to write articles! lol Which is why no articles are being written anymore.
So not sure, but maybe I’m being more clear? There are all these fantastic directions, but only so much time and energy, so really I’ve got to choose just a few, and I’m not sure which few are the best few to accomplish what I’m going for.
