Well, I am now the proud owner of the Xbox One! You want to know the awesome thing? I got it for free!!
Now, the rest of the story…
About 5 months ago I get a call from my life-long friend Scott letting me know he’s looking for a house in Birmingham. Well this is big news because he’s been living out-of-state for almost 18 years, so we’ve rarely seen each other, but have still kept in touch.
Scott works in construction, building and renovating houses and other establishments and he tells me he’s put a contract in a HUD home, but it’s going to need work. The house closes and I learn about his plans. He basically decides to gut the house, tearing out carpet and hardwood floors. Tearing down or relocating walls, redoing tile, rewiring, running new plumbing and of course painting (to name a few things).
I tell him that I’ll help in any way that I can, so over the next couple of months I’m there on most Saturdays and other random times during the week. Now, my skill set is very limited when it comes to anything even remotely considered handy, but I’m a willing participant and sometimes just having an extra hand is greatly needed.
Finally the day comes and he’s ready to actually move in (he’s been staying with his mom) and he’s excited to finally get into his own place. Always appreciative of my help and letting me know we’ll start working on my house soon too, since I need things done…lol
Since the middle of July, we’ve been working on a side job painting a house and he asked me to help. I think this is an awesome way to get my XB1 money because this is a big job, so I’d stand to make a few dollars. I’ve told him of my plans to use the money on the console.
Friday night as we are leaving the house, he tells me to come over to his truck, he’s got something for me. I figured, he’s getting ready to pull a gag on me. Well, he did surprise me…
First he hands me a bag. I look inside and it’s a new controller for the Xbox One. He’s like, “I wanted to get you a little something to say thanks. Oh and I got you this too…” Then he pulls out the console box. I was floored. Totally taken off guard. After probably 10 minutes of me saying “no way, that’s too much” and him “too bad, I’m not taking no for an answer”. I relent and take the console. I felt a wide range of emotions from gratitude to guilt. I had not helped him expecting any form of payment – it’s just something friends do for one another. He did this to show his gratitude and to let me know exactly how much he appreciated all the time and effort I gave helping him work.
I still have mixed feelings about having accepted the gift, but he stated it would mean more to him for me to use and enjoy it – considering the enjoyment he’s had since getting into his home and the memories of us working on the place.
So there’s my story of how I got my XB1! :yahoo:
