You don’t necessarily need to reduce the size in the terms of measurement. There are tools which will keep the same dimensions but reduce the memory size of an image substantially. It is the memory “size” measured in kb or mb which can slow a load time. Most of these tools I think simply reduce the number of color options from unlimited to 250 standard web colors, and while it reduces the file size of the image the picture quality is often nearly the same.
