I don’t know what the answer is to help maintain a healthy forum. It helps when people don’t split immediately after filling their friends list.
I like forums, though. I enjoy reading conversation primarily focused on video games and occasionally care to join the conversation.
These days, being mobile friendly is a HUGE deal.
