School suspends child for edgy-in-1981 Mohawk haircut

Ethan Clos has been suspended from Ohio’s Reid Elementary for sporting a spiked Mohawk haircut. (In case you live under a hairless rock: The Mohawk is a haircut where the head is shaved and only a strip of hair between the eyebrows remains; it was last considered “edgy” or “dangerous” ca. 1981.) Clos’s mother, Keshia Castle, said Ethan, who is 5 years old, felt “cool” with his new ‘do, saying, “All the little kids were going over and feeling on it and everything.” A football coach from neighboring Shawnee High School was profiled in local papers for sporting a Mohawk to motivate his team in 2011, but school superintendent Gregg Morris said the two situations don’t compare because “classrooms were not disrupted” by the coach’s hair.
