With the release of the Master Chief Collection I think there will be new interest in the map callouts & strats for H2 & H3, especially from the old halo fans who are so disappointed w/ Halo’s competitive decline since Reach.

If you decide to work on strats/maps/callouts for H2 & H3 I will commit to a minimum of 1 hr/week helping with it (I know that’s not much time). You could tell me where you need the most help and I’ll dive into that. I could also assist w/ the SEO side of the posts.

I checked the test we are running for “how to snipe in halo 4” and see that it has moved from position 15 to 13…I was hoping to get to at least position 11. But it does indicate that implementing some SEO can help improve rankings, which will ultimately help improve traffic from people who are simply searching for info.

If you want to discuss/explore any of this lets for a chat on xbox sometime monday or tuesday. Just let me know.

It would help to define what success looks like to you. I’ve had a content web site since early 1996, and I’ve had a bulletin board forum (neither gaming related) since well before HCE, but people are people.  I could talk for hours…

Life is short. Do what you enjoy. That’s why I’m here.

I would like an active gaming site where the hours of effort I put forth is returned either in being useful or entertaining for people.

“Active” would be 10 or more people posting in the forums a day, 20-50+ people visiting the forums a day, and 1000-5000+ unique visitors to the entire site a day. Videos posted on YouTube would get at least 500 views in the first week due to our notoriety. <Just to give you a place of reference, a vid posted by one popular Halo-themed YouTuber three days ago has 2500 views already, whereas the most views any of my videos have gotten is 1500 total. Most of them don’t break 300 views, and I’m not talking about the “let’s play” videos, I’m talking about the ones I spent hours and hours on.

Unbelievably, the Epic Holiday RACE video, which has custom music that was recorded and mixed for it, has less than 300 views :( This definitely does not feel like success, and does not encourage me to make more videos. This is a BADASS video, showcasing three gamers’ skills: Kenjamin’s maps, Mace’s shredding guitar, and my editing. Edit: All my videos are quality and uploaded in high def.

The absolute perfect gaming site for me personally would be one where we had so many active friends that some were attracted to the site who were willing to take over some of the responsibilities. Especially, it would be awesome if someone like Waggs and Wizard were to come host casual customs that were open to all. Then it would be cool if we could get in someone like Wadliacha or StainedWithRed to run a clan that is open to some of the younger crowd. Then we get someone running casual-competitive customs and someone to train people who are willing to learn, but maybe aren’t very competitive. This would leave me open to focus on more competitive-oriented customs and training without leaving anyone out.

If enough people were attracted to the site that I had help editing video, coming up with ideas (a team, really), a news team, etc., I personally would be in absolute heaven. Two of my favorite things: creating videos with a team, and training and playing competitively with other people who match or exceed my own abilities. Those things make me happy, but I don’t like playing that hard all the time, and like to be surrounded by all kinds of active people, so something for everyone would be good.

So I’m willing to try what might bring in the people, because I feel that once the people are here the other stuff could fall into place. The numbers above is what I think it would take, I just have no idea how to pull it off.

Others have also mentioned their own gaming needs and desires, and these things would all be more possible with higher numbers.

I found HD last year as a result of a long search for mature/older Halo players. I know from experience that it’s hard to find mature/older active gamers. A suggestion…. Add wording to your “About us” statement that search engines can use to point mature/older gamers in your direction.

I definitely am going to be revamping the About Us page, once I get settled on a direction, and I like that focus on the older gamers, although like I mentioned I have always wanted a place here where younger folks could congregate too.

I’ve had a content web site since early 1996, and I’ve had a bulletin board forum (neither gaming related) since well before HCE, but people are people.  I could talk for hours…

I’m definitely interested in hearing about your experiences and lessons learned from these. Just been biting off one piece of new infos/projects at a time, but kept meaning to come back and ask you about it. Anything you’d like to share is appreciated.

Also, I’ve already come back to this thread several times and read ideas and comments with a fresh, less overwhelmed mind, and it really is all in line with a good focus for the site.

Yes, I received a notice that I read when checking my profile.

In my experience, individual web communities comprise a variable base of regulars and a much larger group of new people. So, site design should lean toward being noob oriented, but have enough features to keep the old hands entertained. Competition for web traffic is fierce. Focus on what you do well and that isn’t easily duplicated.

I guess there’s the issue right there: If I can do many things well, and I’m easily distracted, how do I choose a focus? What is the best “not easily duplicated” focus-es I should choose if I want to encourage an active site. That is what I am attempting to decide with input.

One of the main problems is I bore easily on one track, and am entertained by shooting off on another one, and that is why the site goes in a lot of different directions. I realize this is counter-productive to a focus ;)

What are your interests? Do you want to go beyond halo? I think that you can explore a variety of things so long as it fits under the concept of the website as a whole. A halo site may not do so well at discussing Battlefield. But a gaming website could have separate categories for each game you are interested in.

Similarly, a halo site could include graphics/videos/t-shirt designs etc which have some kind of connection to halo. And the occasional peppering of astronomy makes for a good read on a halo site. But if you want to rank for astronomy then a separate site for that would be better.

Ultimately, if your goal is to draw traffic, I think that your best bet is to have a separate site for each major interest (one for halo, one for Battlefield, one for Destiny, etc) simply because by putting the name of the game in the website’s name gives you an instant SEO advantage over other sites which do not.

However, getting traffic is different than encouraging participation. And multiple sites is more difficult to keep a handle on. I think that for the primary purpose of building participation it may be better to have a gaming site with categories by game.

You make some very good points here, Krull, and so focused!

Like I’ve said, one thing I’m sure of is my primary purpose is building participation. However, to build participation you have to draw in traffic.

So:

1. I enjoy interacting with people

2. I enjoy being of service and providing entertainment & I’m willing to do this to draw in traffic to interact with people.

3. I need to decide a focus for the entertainment I provide that will draw in the most traffic so that there is plenty of participation. Because spending hours and hours creating entertainment that is useful to only a handful of people is not worth all the effort I put into it, and does not produce the return I need to fuel me to continue. I need people to be using the entertainment I create, or it needs to be drawing in enough people for me to have that interaction, otherwise it’s not worth the time and energy I put into it.

I definitely don’t have the time to run more than one site, at least not unless or until I get teams helping run sites, which is a natural part of more traffic=more peeps=more of a chance those who are interested in writing articles, running games nights, helping with vids, etc – in short creating entertainment. So as far as SEO goes and having sites that match game titles, I’m just not sure what to do. I think my main focus will continue to be Halo for quite awhile, but it seems to me an fps site would bring in more people.

Here are some changes happening so far (at least as of today, lol):

* Krull is going to help CHa0s write a series of articles on strategy for Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

* Halo Diehards is starting a podcast.

* CHa0s has started streaming and will continue to do so, w/ or w/out her face, lol

* CHa0s will continue working on the SEO of the site, which Krull has guided on immensely

* CHa0s has been re-organizing the site and fixing issues w/ hidden pages, etc

* CHa0s will continue maintainence on the site

* Every Thurs I’m going to try and reTweet and Google+ an old article (#ThrowbackThursday)

* I’ll keep sharing art, people seem to really dig that

* CHa0s will try to put out one video per week (at least)

* CHa0s will try to host customs on Friday nights if Yukon is not available/interested

As you can see, that is a LOT!! And did you notice anything? I didn’t even put writing articles on the list, which includes browsing Twitter and newssites. Also not on that list is maintaining contacts with other communities or working on any art.

All of these things take research, they take self-education, they take time. I don’t have time to write articles! lol Which is why no articles are being written anymore.

So not sure, but maybe I’m being more clear? There are all these fantastic directions, but only so much time and energy, so really I’ve got to choose just a few, and I’m not sure which few are the best few to accomplish what I’m going for.

It sounds like a great list! Very organized and specific, and as you mentioned, lots of work. Just make sure that your schedule is doable and attainable w/o burning yourself out. As Minetor said earlier, pick the things which you enjoy doing the most, and then incorporate the boring but essential stuff into those efforts. So, for your videos and art, just include the SEO tactics which can help it be found in search.

I like the idea of ThrowbackThursday. You can use Google Analytics to see which social media platform is sending “referring” you the most traffic. And social media may actually be a great way to get the engagement you are looking for.

Oh! Pinterest! Do you have a pinterest account? It could be a great way to get some traffic and share your work. Easy to set-up, almost no maintenance so it won’t take extra time after you set it up. It is perfect for sharing your art and videos because it is simply a collection of images which people can share and collect to their account. Here is mine for an example:

http://www.pinterest.com/chefsresources/

I think you’re right about having more than one site being too much…I’ve thought about it several times, tried starting a second one once, and have decided to just do the one simply because, like you, I don’t have the time. So I do the things I enjoy researching, and then incorporate the SEO into that and hope that some of my work will rank.

I’ve often thought about setting a schedule such as: week 1 I do articles, week 2 I do a video, week 3 I focus on SEO maintenance/learning, etc.. But my current routine is to skip around based upon what I want to work on…and keep a list of the things which I know need to be done and just try to pick one of those each month to work on. Sometimes its SEO, sometimes its a necessary but exceedingly boring article, sometimes its a very labor intensive project.

Ok, made a Pinterest and there’s an image on there from the site! Just found one, but hey, I aint complainin’. Got some questions:

* How to I pin content from my site? Do I need a Pinterest share button here to do that?

* Should I have a Halo Diehards board, or just a Halo board and mix other Halo stuff in there?

* Should I just have a Halo board and not mix anything but Halo Diehards stuff in there.

* How come I get hungry every time I look at your food pictures? I gotta go eat!

I will commit to running Friday Nights if you want me to do it Chaos !?

And I am sure I will put forth even more effort (creations) in the future (MCC!) or with added participants I could find the need. :)

I would also like to add something to Friday Nights…..

If people wanna play in our Friday Night room, they need to be a participating member of Halo Diehards !

Ok, sounds good to me. Actually, we’d better define what exactly you mean by participating, lol. And you want to put an age cap on it too, like 2o2p? Say 25 and up? Also, what do you think about me streaming it?
