What are Cryptums?

According to Halo Nation, Cryptums are “the Forerunner device created for Warrior-Servants to enter as a form of punishment by exile.

Halo 4 Didact Cryptum

A lot of things have been shown everywhere on the Internet about new elements and details about the Campaign. The purpose of this article is not to spoil anything, but to keep you up to speed on what you SHOULD already know by know.

Prometheans are the newest threat that will give us a lot of trouble in the game; in case you did not know, a regular Promethean knight is “slightly” stronger than a Elite, and that is already a lot. While it is not clear how these were created, Knights, Crawlers, and Watchers are AI’s. Do not confuse them with the actual organic Prometheans, the ones that created these AI’s. What does this mean? Who knows . . . we might figure it out in Halo 4 or in the new book Halo Silentium (which comes out in January 8th 2013).

Talking about books, in Halo Cryptum it is mentioned that Prometheans created the Cryptums which were basically small prisons for those who dishonored or failed the Forerunners. While it was unknown for most Forerunners, the first Cryptum was found about 100,000 B.C. by the Forerunner Bornstellar which had the Didact -a Supreme Commander Promethean who was exiled-  inside the Cryptum. It was later destroyed, freeing the Didact.

The second known Cryptum curiously appears in Halo 4, so far it is unknown what or who is inside it. There has been some speculation that the Didact could be inside it; yet, in the Halo 4 Cinematics that have been shown so far, the Cryptum simply doesn’t bother on fighting John-117. Why is this relevant? In the 10th terminal of Halo CE Anniversary Guilty Spark warn us that the Didact wants to take revenge on the humans since John destroyed Installation 04 (A & B). Therefore, there is a possibility that there could be something else inside it.

How did this hate toward humans start? The Forerunners fought against the humans (110,000 B.C) and the precursors (150,000 B.C.) to get the Mantle. After they won these wars, they assumed to have the Mantle. However, according to the book Halo Primordium, “the Primordial” (a presumed Precursor) told the Didact that humans were meant to inherit the Mantle (in order words, they would be the guardians of the galaxy) and not the Forerunners. And with the incident with the Flood and the Installations, this fed Didact’s rage.

Even though the Didact could be an antagonist in Halo 4, this question still is in my mind, who or what is the so called ancient enemy in this game? It can’t be the Didact. It can’t be that simple, as Cortana said once, the milk way “hides dark secrets, some of them which have been dormant since the beginning of time . . . the halos were once such secret.”
What do you guys think? I leave with this beautiful piece of work from the Halo 4 Original Soundtrack.
