Halo Diehards Spotlight: Scourge

The Halo story and imagery inspires hundreds – no thousands – of fans to create. The immense universe and captivating, mood altering graphics of the Halo series have infiltrated our minds, perhaps even our souls. From videos, to paintings, to My Little Pony Hyabusa (Euchhh!!), the wealth of creativity and content is truly staggering.

Although it’s fun to see handmade Halo beanbags and watch entertaining Halo machinima, sometimes this Diehard is caught off guard by custom content that catches the spirit of the thing, bringing wistful memories of that first, fresh experience in the world of Halo, exploring the awe and beauty of the landscape, embarking on an adventure where you feel that somehow, when all is said and done, you will finish that particular fight somehow… different.

Scourge07, Deviant artist captures this spirit of Halo.

10 Questions with Scourge07

1. Approximately how many hours of Halo do you play a week?
Back in the day I used to play quite a bit. Every time a new Halo game was released, I would easily play between 10-20 hours per week.  Unfortunately, I don’t have as much time anymore to do so, but I still get that urge every so often to pop in one of the CD’s and revisit a campaign level for old time’s sake.

2. Where did you get the idea for your fan art?
Mostly just from being a huge Halo fan!  I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for the Sci-Fi genre, and the Halo universe drew me in right away. I truly believe that it is the Star Wars of our generation. With that in mind, from a very young age, I would always draw 2D sketches of starships, war scenes, battles, etc.  One day in 2009, I suddenly had the urge to revisit my simplistic art hobby.  I started drawing 3D scenes, and worked on getting decently proficient with digital painting in Photoshop.  You can see how my work has evolved from the basic graphite/charcoal drawings from 2009 to the picture “Unyielding”, which I just recently completed.

3. How do/did you go about coming up with your idea?
See above. The more I practiced my skills, the more eager I was to create more content. I enjoy the concept of fan art because I believe it is really exciting to create my own renditions of scenes from the stories that I love, especially the story behind Halo.

I’m just very thankful to God that I’ve been given this gift to create something that brings back memories and induces nostalgia for so many people.

4. What’s the most memorable thing that happened while you were playing Halo on LIVE?
Haha, wow there’s a bit too many to choose from on Live. However, one multiplayer experience that really stands out for me occurred around 2 years ago on Halo 3. I was split screening with a few other buds at my friend’s dorm prior to a party.  Let’s just say that they were very alert, whereas I had few drinks in me at that point. (My coordination was not the best…) It was a four player free for all on Zanzibar.  I’m usually a rather boisterous fellow, but I slipped on my sunglasses and got dead silent after picking up the controller. (I’m known for being a pretty decent Halo player among my immediate friends, and I was determined not to lose despite my temporary…handicap.)  It was a close game, but to the dismay of the other players, I pulled out a killing spree at the end for a final victory, saving my reputation. Now, I hadn’t said a dang word for the past 15 minutes, but once “GAME OVER” came out of the TV’s speakers, I tossed my controller in the air and let out a victory screech/dance for a good 60 seconds – one of my happiest moments. Needless to say, I think I scared every girl in the room that night.

5. Have you created other Halo content?
Besides taking a few simple in-game screenshots, not really!  Focusing on the art right now.  I do enjoy playing the piano as well, so I’m hoping to snag some Halo sheet music and try my hand at that. I have also created fan art from other universes, which can found at my deviantART gallery.

6. If you knew Earth were going to get glassed one year from today, what would you do with that year?
The list would be too big to place here, but needless to say, I’d spend my time preparing. I ain’t letting those split lip bastards take us down without a fight.

7. What are your thoughts on the direction that the Halo Story is heading?
343 Industries has some big shoes to fill, but I have high hopes for it. I’m not going to lie – like many others, I’m a bit skeptical now that Bungie is no longer at the reigns, and I do feel like the franchise is starting to get milked. With that being said, the content that I’ve seen so far in regard to Halo 4 looks absolutely stunning.  I am very eager to see what 343 has in store for us, and cannot wait until November!

8. List some people who inspire you and why.
Strangely enough, I can’t really think of a particular individual at the moment. However, speaking more generally, a group of people that make me feel very inspired are the Navy SEALS. The amount of training and shear suffering that they have to go through in order to achieve their level of “elite-ness” is absolutely unreal.  I try to maintain my own fitness by following the mental/physical training in the SEALFIT program.  Google it when you have the time!  I admire this community because of the courage, attention to detail, and discipline that it values, all qualities that I can apply to every aspect of my life, including my hobby as an artist.

9. How long have you been creating your Halo content and how many have you created?
I was drawing really simple 2D sketches all the way back when Combat Evolved first came out. I started taking it more seriously back in 2009 when I decided to create a picture to represent each level from Halo: CE. Once I got proficient in Photoshop, my art evolved into what is now. Since 2009, I’ve created 19 pieces of Halo-related art.

10. Are you in a Halo clan? Why/why not?
I am not. Don’t really have the time at the moment to play competitively. I prefer to be a Lone Wolf.
